Do we really have to explain how to wear a jacket?
It’s frustrating when you see a jacket (or any item) wearing a person rather than the other way around. Seeing a lack of balance between thread and personality is a sight that makes you want to gouge out your eyes and really, is just plain sad.
We know that is a bit on the extreme end. At any rate, below are a few key points to keep in mind when choosing a jacket to wear that will ensure you’ll get it right the first time around:
1. Fit- Don’t compromise on this. A jacket should not be too snug or too loose. Some rain jackets may not be tailored. Just know it’s better to have room than to feel cramped in your own clothes.
2. Detail- Knowing the occasion you’re dressing for is important. It doesn’t matter if it’s a run to the market or a second movie date. Know when to halt on a particular color or fabric based on any situation you may encounter. Shape, pocket styles and buttons can make a huge statement and at times, the wrong impression.
3. Style- Be aware of how you’ll style a particular jacket. It’s not just a layering piece to get you through the day. Think of it as a defining moment. A multi-fabric/material jacket may be worn with a shirt and tie to cut down on the jacket’s sporty flair. A long military trench can seem plain beige. Try to make it stand out by pairing it with a pop of color. Taking into account the social stigmas of clothing can help you make the right styling choices.
